Environment 2014 - Top 10 legal risks and challenges for environmental management

Environment eBulletin - 24 January 2014

Envirotoptips cover

In 2013, we saw major changes to environmental law and policy around Australia. Among them, new standards for contaminated land assessment were enacted, significant changes were proposed to Australia’s climate change regulation, and extensive amendments were made to directors’ and managers’ liability. We also observed increased environmental enforcement activity from state, territory and Federal regulators.

A core part of effective environmental compliance and risk management is identification of legal developments and risks. This publication is designed to help you do just that.

We’ve identified the Top 10 legal challenges and risks that in our view are likely to pose the greatest cost, legal or reputational risks, and administrative burden for organisations in 2014.

The list is based on our first-hand experience advising Australian corporations throughout 2013 and our insight into the real challenges faced by environment managers. For each of the Top 10 issues, we have also suggested a practical checklist of management actions that your business can take to minimise risk.
