Is Australian family law the right forum for you?
It is not uncommon for the law of more than one country to apply to expats or foreign nationals, including the law of Australia. Different countries' laws may provide different outcomes for addressing property division, parenting arrangements for children, spousal maintenance (alimony), child support, and divorce, following the breakdown of a relationship.
Understanding which legal jurisdictions apply to your circumstances and the different practical outcomes of each will help you to understand where the best result for you is likely to be achieved. Conducting this assessment is an important first step, as outcomes may differ significantly for married versus de facto couples (also known as common law couples), or same-sex versus heterosexual couples, depending on the laws of the different countries involved.
