Lander & Rogers has committed to becoming "a sustainable firm in every sense of the word", laying out an ambitious roadmap for embedding sustainability capability across all its operations as the firm looks to lead the legal sector in sustainable business practices.
"Our vision is that by 2030, sustainability will inform everything we do at Lander & Rogers ─ how we govern, procure, partner and grow," said Chief Executive Partner, Daniel Proietto. "Being a sustainable firm means we, and the clients we advise, can respond with confidence to the challenges, opportunities and risks we face together."
In its recently released 2030 sustainability strategy, titled Growth, for good, Lander & Rogers has announced a net-zero target of 2038, validated and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) ─ a voluntary corporate climate action organisation widely recognised as the most credible global decarbonisation initiative. The firm has also committed to an approved near-term target of reducing its scope 3 emissions by 68% against its FY21 baseline by 2030; diverting 70% of operational waste from landfill by 2030, and continuing to source 100% renewable electricity across its offices, which it has done since 2022. Climate risk considerations will be integrated into firmwide strategic decisions, with robust governance oversight, and employees will undertake sustainability training relevant to their role.
Beyond climate action, the firm has set goals to respect and advance equity and human rights, and support inclusive economic participation. This includes embedding stronger protections for workers in the firm's supply chain by identifying and acting on human rights, modern slavery and labour risks, and increasing engagement and spend with social enterprise and First Nations suppliers. To meet its targets, the firm has pledged to uphold best practice in digital, cyber and AI governance and to foster transparency and accountability through internal and external reporting.
"Our 2030 strategy recognises that we operate within complex digital, social and natural systems, and that all our actions have far-reaching consequences," said Lander & Rogers' Head of Sustainability, Tanya Harris. "We've been intentional and holistic in our goal setting, building on our existing credentials and identifying material topics to direct our focus where we can make a genuine, positive change in a way that's grounded in evidence and data."
Lander & Rogers has a long record of driving positive action for its people, clients, community and environment. Earlier this year the firm achieved a Bronze EcoVadis rating, a globally recognised assessment of a company's sustainability performance. The firm has been certified carbon neutral by government-backed initiative Climate Active since 2022; is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, and has been recognised as an Employer of Choice by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) since 2020.
Joanna Renkin, practice group lead of Pro Bono, Community & Sustainability at Lander & Rogers, noted that throughout its 80-year history the firm has always been "a workplace grounded in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. The goals and actions in our Growth, for good strategy continue our history of care for our people, clients, community and environment and pave the way for measurable and meaningful impact."
Mr Proietto said: "This next phase in our growth holds exceptional promise for strengthening the systems we are part of and enhancing our network of relationships. We look forward to building our firm's resilience and capability and working with our people, clients, suppliers and community partners to deliver improved outcomes that will benefit all of us."
