Lander & Rogers advises ARTC on landmark Pimba Intermodal Terminal project

Freight rail train in Australia

Lander & Rogers has advised Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) on the key land and ancillary agreements that unlock the development of the Pimba Intermodal Terminal in South Australia - a key component of one of Australia’s largest-ever road-to-rail freight conversion projects.

Delivered as part of a broader transaction between BHP and Aurizon, the project will integrate road, rail, and port logistics to service BHP’s Olympic Dam mine and other mining operations in the region. Once operational, the new terminal will enable around 1.3 million tonnes of product per year to move by rail instead of road, removing an estimated 11,000 truck movements and 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

Lander & Rogers partner James Hill, who led the matter, said:

”It takes an incredible team effort to achieve great outcomes for our clients on major projects like this one. The Pimba Intermodal Terminal is a transformational project for ARTC and for freight logistics in Australia, and we’re proud to have played a part in bringing it to fruition.”

The deal was managed by a cross-practice team from Lander & Rogers, including construction and rail industry insurance experts Ralph Bankes and Alex Foxcroft, real estate experts John Soueid, Lisa Townsend and Sarah Coningham, and construction and infrastructure experts Rohan Dias and Darcy Wilson.

The Pimba Intermodal Terminal is part of a decades-in-the-making integrated logistics solution that will boost freight efficiency, safety, and sustainability while supporting South Australia’s growing copper export industry.
